Lithotripsy uses shock waves to pulverize urinary calculi (kidney stones) non-invasively. In contrast, other methods of stone removal require open surgery (surgical nephrotomy); extraction of the stone through a puncture in the side of the patient (percutaneous extraction); or the insertion of a ureteroscope via the urethra with subsequent stone fragmentation and removal by mechanical means. All invasive procedures carry a higher risk of infection complications than non-invasive procedures such as lithotripsy The most obvious reason to learn about kidney stones and modify a person's behavior accordingly is to avoid the intense pain which they cause. But the most important reason is because kidney stones can quickly lead to failure of the kidneys which is life threatening. A kidney stone that does not pass on out can block the urinary tract. This blockage will probably cause pain initially. But if medical attention is not received to identify the cause of the pain and remove the blockage, the pain is likely to gradually go away over a few days time. This lack of pain may cause the sufferer to think the crisis has passed when, in fact, the kidney which has been blocked by the stone has shut down. If left untreated in just a few days this shut down can lead to permanent loss of function in that kidney. A kidney stone can even rupture the collection system of the kidney. Your kidneys are bean-shaped organs, each about the size of your fist. They are located near the middle of your back, just below the rib cage. The kidneys are sophisticated trash collectors. Every day, your kidneys process about 200 quarts of blood to sift out about 2 quarts of waste products and extra water. The waste and extra water become urine, which flows to your bladder through tubes called ureters. Your bladder stores urine until you go to the bathroom. Healthy kidneys clean the blood by taking away extra water and wastes. The kidneys turn the extra water and waste into urine. Kidneys also make hormones that keep your bones strong and your blood healthy. They keep a stable balance of salts and other substances in your blood. When both your kidneys stop working, your body holds fluids, your blood pressure goes up, and harmful wastes build up in your body. Also, your body does not make enough red blood cells. This is known as end-stage renal disease (ESRD). ESRD is the final stage of the slow worsening of the kidneys. More than 50,000 people have ESRD each year in the United States.

The two main treatments for ESRD are dialysis and kidney transplantation. Dialysis uses a machine or special tubes to clean your blood. Kidney transplantation means that you get a healthy kidney from a donor or relative put into your body to replace your kidneys that are not working. Symptoms related to kidney failure usually occur only in late stages of the disease, when kidney function has diminished to less than 25 percent of normal capacity. For many years before that point, kidney disease of diabetes exists as a silent process. The signs that your kidney disease may be getting worse include a need to urinate more or less than you usually do. You may lose your appetite or feel sick to your stomach and need to throw up. Your hands and feet may swell or feel numb. You may get sleepy or have trouble concentrating. Your skin may get darker. You may have muscle cramps.

Bladder stones are an uncommon cause of illness in most Western countries, but they result in specific symptoms and are a significant source of discomfort. It is not unusual for tiny crystals to form in the urine of healthy people, as many of the substances eliminated by the kidneys are only just soluble in water. A change in the acidity of urine, for example, can change the chemical environment of the urine enough to cause crystals to form. Provided these crystals remain small enough, they are flushed out without causing any symptoms or trouble. Some people do however have an increased tendency to form urine stones, either starting within the kidney and ending up in the bladder, or forming within the bladder itself. A structural abnormality of the bladder such as blind pouch might encourage this by producing a 'stagnant' area that does not drain properly when passing urine. Another complicating factor is infection of the urine, which can be due to and encourage the further growth of bladder stones. In older men an enlarged prostate can encourage the growth of a bladder stone by restricting the proper and full drainage of the bladder.
